Lioness Stalking, Madikwe

A lioness seems indifferent to zebra and waterbuck, walking past them slowly as they watch on from a safe distance.

Lions are the biggest cats in Africa, an apex predator and a keystone species. Lionesses do the majority of hunting, but contrary to popular belief, male lions also contribute.

Lion kills are usually large – like giraffe, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest and kudu.

Madikwe Game Reserve

Our lioness is stalking the plains of Tau Game Lodge in the Madikwe game reserve on the borders of South Africa and Botswana. The camera streams wildlife live from the Tau waterhole.

There are frequent sightings of elephant, white and black rhino, lion, cheetah, spotted & brown hyena, buffalo, leopard, zebra, endangered wild dog, giraffe, ostrich and warthog. Various antelope species also come to drink – Impala, springbok, kudu, waterbuck, wildebeest, eland, blesbok, nyala and the even elusive sable.

Alert herbivores watch on

As the alert herbivores watch on, the lioness takes a casual stroll past them. The lioness doesn’t seem to be in hunt mode, and almost ignores the prey that surround her, who are equally confused.

The lioness goes from a canter to a stroll, as more and more antelope watch from a distance. She passes waterbuck, impala, zebra, and even a lone ostrich.

Eventually the lioness moves past the waterhole and off into the bush. A happy ending for the potential prey.
