Lions and their cute cubs wait patiently for elephants to finish drinking at the ol Donyo waterhole in Kenya.

ol Donyo, Kenya

ol Donyo Lodge is located in the Chyulu Hills just east of Mount Kilimanjaro in Kenya. The waterhole at ol Donyo attracts a vast number of animals, including lions, giraffe, hyena, baboon, eland, tortoises, African hawk eagles, and the famous big tuskers.

Big Tuskers

ol Donyo Lodge in Kenya is known for beautiful big tuskers, who often visit the waterhole. Big Tuskers are elephants with tusks that way more than 100 pounds or 50kg each. Some tusks are so large they reach the ground when they walk.

Because of the frequency of wildlife visitors to the waterhole, very often two species will come into contact with each other. In this case, lions and their cubs make way for the thirsty elephants.

Elephants are very protective over their water sources, and often chase other animals away. Lions are too smart to mess with elephants. They don’t seem scared enough to run away, but make sure they keep a safe distance while the noisy elephants slurp away at the waterhole.

The lion cubs even enjoy play fighting in the background – perfectly framed by the tusks and trunks of the elephants enjoying a drink. In the end, everyone is happy to share the waterhole, albeit safely and separately.
